Converting Word doc to a newer file format

Step 1: Identify old file types.

You will see this one is a "Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document". Newer file types will show as "Microsoft Word Document".
Step 2: Open the file
Step 3: click on the file tab at the top left hand side.
Step 4: Click on the save as tab at the left hand side of the page.

On the right hand side there is a dropdown menu that contains all the options for saving.
Step 5: from the drop down box, select "Word Document(*.docx)"
Step 6: Press save

Now you will see the new document is saved as a Microsoft Word Document
